ABRSM Music Theory Grade 5

ABRSM has changed to Online Theory Exam starting from the year 2021. The following handout is created to help students to prepare for the exam for piano level assessment singapore.

What is covered in ABRSM Music Theory Grade 5?

  • Irregular time signatures and note and rest groupings

  • The Tenor C clef

  • The interval of transposition up or down: major 2nd, minor 3rd and perfect 5th

  • Scales and key signatures of all major and minor keys up to and including six sharps and flats.

  • All simple and compound intervals from any note.

  • The root position (a), 1st inversion (b) and 2nd inversion (c) forms of the tonic, supertonic, subdominant and dominant chords in any of the keys.

  •  Perfect, imperfect and plagal cadences

  • Terms and signs

  • The recognition of ornaments

  • Types of voice and names of instruments, the clefs they use, instrument family groups and the basic way by which they produce sound

  • General musical observation designed to test the candidate’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge to actual music
